"Borgo Mezzanone is a small town located on the outskirts of Foggia, in the southern Italian region of Apulia. It hosts one of the largest slums in Europe, commonly known as “La Pista” (the airstrip), as it is located on a former base of the Italian Air Force. The slum is adjacent to the local C.A.R.A, a refugees reception centre, and has a population of about 1500 labourers, which reaches the 5000 during the tomato season. Drinking water is scarce, as it is sanitation, and dumping grounds seem to trace the borders of the ghetto. Illegal connections to crumbling electric poles constantly expose the residents to the risk of fires, which often occur also maliciously because of gang conflicts. One of these fires led to the dramatic passing of Mohamed Ben Ali, a 37-year-old boy from Senegal."
